The Art of Plain Language

Too much writing today is highfalutin or gobbledygook. And you've heard all the jokes about legalese. Learn to write in a style that your readers will find interesting, friendly, and informative. Good writing doesn't have to be complicated. This course will show you how to use words, sentences and paragraphs for maximum effect.

Effective Communication

Organizations increasingly rely on people to move information effectively and expeditiously as delays can be costly. Our understanding of the importance of effective communication is only surpassed by our understanding of the organizational costs of failing to do so. Combining mini-lectures, small group activity, and role play sessions, this course will develop and improve your ability to communicate effectively with your co-workers, employees and supervisors.

Proofreading is relatively easy; to be a good editor is the real challenge. This course presents the process, philosophy, tools, and knowledge (or to where to find it) to help you become an effective proofreader and editor. You’ll discover 14 proofreading tips and the four Cs of editing. The course’s examples, practice texts, and group work clarify key points and provide ample opportunity to apply what you learn.

Chances are, you have encountered some kind of report or proposal today. This course will familiarize you with various types of reports and proposals, their components, similarities and differences. Explore aspects of writing that go beyond technical proficiency - beyond, that is, the avoidance of 'mistakes' - to get to the heart of what makes really good writing. You will learn how the principles of effective writing function as the foundation for effective professional documents, from simple emails to complex proposals. You will learn to apply the principles of effective writing to your own work. Key principles include unity, structural transparency, and top-down design.
