Management of Oral Anticoagulation Therapy Primary Care Certificate Program

The University of Waterloo is pleased to offer a Primary Care Certificate Program in the Management of Oral Anticoagulation Therapy (MOAT) for pharmacists, registered nurses and nurse practitioners. This non-credit program is offered in partnership with Professional Development, the School of Pharmacy and the Centre for Family Medicine.

Course Overview

This program provides pharmacists, registered nurses and nurse practitioners with the knowledge and skills to effectively and safely manage oral anticoagulation therapy under a medical directive.

Course Details

This certificate consists of two components: an online, self-paced learning module, and an experiential mini-clinical rotation comprised of three visits to the anticoagulation clinic at the Centre for Family Medicine. There are limited clinic times slots available.

Online Module

The online component is delivered through Waterloo's online learning management system, LEARN. It consists of readings and several case studies designed to prepare you for your clinical site visits. You will have access to the online module one month before your first site visit.

High speed internet access is required. Before registering, you should check your computer system to make sure it meets the minimum requirements.

Three Site Visits

Under the supervision of clinical pharmacist Dr. Jeff Nagge, PharmD, you will develop the competence to make confident warfarin dosing decisions, and create appropriate anticoagulation-related care plans for your patients.

Evaluation of Participants

You will be evaluated in three manners:

  1. responses to the case studies assigned in the online module
  2. performance on a test to be completed after finishing the online module
  3. performance at each of the three clinic experiences

Course Fee:

$1,500 Cdn. plus HST. Payment can be made by Visa, MasterCard or American Express only.

Refund Policy

Due to high demand, and the limited availability of clinical dates, no refunds will be given. Please ensure you are available for all the dates you register for.
